Chase Williamson
I am a visual artist based in Knoxville, Tennessee. In my paintings, I delve into the profound connection between Black women and the healing elements exuded by the Southern Black Garden and the element of water. Using oil, acrylic, and familial fabric, I situate Black femmes amidst vivid florals and racialized landscapes. This is done in pursuit of reclaiming land and water as a cultural space.
The Southern Black garden, with its rich soil, emerges as a sacred ground for healing. Water, a symbol of fluidity and renewal, flows through the narrative by mirroring the cyclical journey of healing. These two entities are rendered to spin taxing histories as motivators for healing, rest, and renewal. Black women engage in these self-made spaces, transcending generational trauma and cultivating new connections with their body and heritage. Through my art, I aim to sew together - both physically and metaphorically - collective remembrance, honesty, and care.
