Larry Sheffield

Larry Sheffield is an artist whose prints re-examine the history of representation by transposing marginalized groups and ethnicities into a canon not formally embodied in classicism. His practice seeks to draw parallels between the hidden messages of power and identity in Greco-Roman mythologies, and their contemporary relevance in identity theories. By re-appropriating the aesthetics of classical art, he creates allegories that illuminate the “barbaric” and “disposable” through an eccentric idealism that personifies beauty, wealth, intellect and grace. In doing so, Sheffield ultimately retells the history and hegemonic narratives of the “other” through an inclusive lens, where Western norms have traditionally excluded and/or romanticized historically invisible groups.
